Ulcer are wounds that develop on the inner surface of the stomach, food pipe or intestines. Depending on the place where the ulcer occurs, it is known by different names. For example, an ulcer in the stomach is called a "gastric ulcer", similarly an ulcer in the front part of the small intestine is called a "duodenal ulcer".
Ulcer Causes
-
Bacterial infection: The most common culprit is Helicobacter pylori, a pesky bacteria that wreaks havoc on the stomach lining.
-
Excessive use of NSAIDs: Over-the-counter painkillers like aspirin and ibuprofen can be harmful if taken too often, damaging the stomach.
-
Smoking:Lighting up regularly increases stomach acid, putting smokers at higher risk.
-
Alcohol:Heavy drinking weakens the stomach’s defense against acid.
-
Stress:While it doesn’t directly cause ulcers, it can make symptoms worse.
